If you are considering studying in Japan, let’s think about visas together. Visas for studying at a Japanese language school can be divided into two types.
① Student Visa
You can apply for a student visa if you wish to study at a Japanese language school for 6 months or more. Only schools accredited by the Immigration Bureau can apply for the “Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)” that is part of the preliminary visa screening process required for a student visa. Among the accredited schools, there are “suitable schools” that are ranked highly by the Immigration Bureau and “less suitable schools” that are not. Even if you apply for a student visa, you cannot enter Japan without permission. Therefore, when choosing a Japanese language school, the school’s success rate for being granted the CoE is also important.
② Other visas (short-term stay, working holiday and more)
You can study at a Japanese language school for shorter periods of time even if your main purpose for being in Japan is not studying abroad. You will have to apply yourself for a separate kind of visa that suits your purpose for being in Japan. For example, you can study Japanese part-time while you are working.
