Kanda University of International Studies Graduate School (MA TESOL Program)

Assistant Director, Associate Professor, Kanda University of International Studies

Gordon Myskow, PhD

One feature of the Kanda MA TESOL program that makes it so refreshing and exciting to be part of is its emphasis on practicality. Though pedagogical theory and methods are covered in the courses, it is the application of ideas in particular contexts and the specific teaching issues arising in them that are of primary focus. Another important aspect of the program is its emphasis on developing professional expertise. Teachers in the program are not trained to follow rigid methods and procedures. We aim to cultivate the knowledge, skills and self-reflective practices needed to make informed teaching decisions in diverse contexts. Perhaps the most exciting part of the program for me is its emphasis on creating and maintaining a professional community of teachers. We believe that teachers learn and thrive most when they are working together with other teachers as part of a positive and supportive community. Therefore, we aim to provide opportunities throughout the program for teachers to collaborate and work toward shared goals. We hope that by nurturing a strong and supportive community in the Kanda TESOL MA program, it will grow beyond the classroom walls to bring more teachers together to positively impact English education in Japan.
